Stand Out from the Crowd at Festivals & Shows

March 2014

When you participate in an arts and crafts fair, you will be surrounded by other vendors selling similar wares. You need to figure out a way to increase your visibility so the consumers come to you and not your competitor. Don’t get lost in the crowd by not putting the same amount of effort into your booth aesthetics as you do your merchandise.

First and foremost, be nice. If you aren’t projecting a positive attitude, your potential customers will walk right on by. The moment you see someone stop to catch a glimpse of what you are selling you should immediately engage them. Even something as simple as a hello with a genuine smile is enough to draw them closer. If you have a good sense of humor, this would be a good time to put it to good use.

The best way to draw their eyes to you is to implement color into your booth. You want to draw their attention away from other vendors, so take advantage of bright colors that will complement the items you have for sale. Don’t get stuck in the habit of using white tables and display clothes. The majority of other vendors will have them as well, so with a colorful table or canopy, you will be more likely to bring their attention in the right direction: yours.

It would also be a good idea to have a large sign with your name or your business’s name. Put your artistic skills to good use and create an eye-catching display that not only lets the customer know you are talented with a simple glance, but also lets them know who they are buying from. If possible, you could also include an image of your most popular product as well.

Considering how busy craft shows can be, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to employ the help of a friend or partner. While you man the table and process sales, they can stand out in front to draw people in with conversation or tidbits of information about your products. They can also answer any questions your potential customers may have while you are busy running the register.

A craft fair can be a hectic, yet rewarding, experience. If this is your only source of income, you should do everything in your power to draw as many customers to you over the many competitors that you can. More customers will result in more money, and who doesn’t want that?
